MoveOn Statement on Mike Johnson’s Election to Speaker of the House
Washington, D.C. – Following a chaotic and disastrous nomination process in which multiple Republicans launched failing bids for the speakership, leaving the House without leadership for weeks as Americans face critical issues, MoveOn Political Action Executive Director Rahna Epting released the following statement:
“It appears fourth time’s the charm for this dysfunctional Republican Party. Mike Johnson might seem like another anonymous Republican, but we know his extreme agenda all too well. He was the chief House architect of the effort to throw out the 2020 election. He wants to ban abortion and contraception. He wants to ban gay marriage and interracial marriage. He opposes the Violence Against Women Act. He wants more tax giveaways for corporations and higher profits for drug companies. He is the MAGA mascot for speaker, and every Republican, including the 18 who represent districts that President Biden won in 2020, just enthusiastically voted him to be their leader. MoveOn members will make sure Republicans are held accountable for this extremist MAGA agenda and for this indefensible vote they all took.”
