2024’s Winners and Losers: Year in Review

For those of us in the news business, 2024 provided a steady stream of stories to cover—and rarely a dull moment. From the Republican primaries early in the year to the assassination attempts and political conventions this summer, our Daily Signal team stayed busy through Election Day and in the days that followed. During his first term as president, Donald Trump provided a plethora of political and policy news for us to report. We expect the same will be true in 2025. But before we turn the page on this…

Biden Ramps Up Search for DEI Hires Ahead of Trump Administration

Within 10 days of President-elect Donald Trump’s landslide victory, 33 DEI-related jobs were posted by the federal government. Now, with barely a month until Trump takes office, The Daily Wire reported that the feds are “currently in the process of hiring as many as 1,200 employees to work on … [diversity, equity, and inclusion]—employees who would be embedded into the permanent federal workforce headed into the Trump administration.” The outlet noted that the posted “jobs have annual salaries of up to $ 310,000 and could add up to total salary payouts of…

From Illegal Immigration to ‘No Tax on Tips,’ Youngkin Models States Working with Trump on America First Policies

Virginia Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin is demonstrating how states should work together with President-elect Donald Trump to enact a smart, conservative agenda. This is key leadership by Youngkin as some blue state governors vow to impede Trump’s agenda at every turn. For example, Youngkin recently announced his budget proposal to crack down on the Old Dominion’s sanctuary cities. Youngkin’s “No Sanctuary Cities” budget proposal would require local law enforcement, sheriffs, and jail directors to fully comply with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers and provide notification to U.S. Customs 48…

Lawmakers in Michigan—one of the most fiercely contested battleground states in the 2024 presidential election—will consider an amendment to the state Constitution to ensure that only citizens vote.  Michigan state Rep. Bryan Posthumus, the No. 2 Republican in the House as floor leader, says that next month he will propose a constitutional amendment requiring prospective voters to produce proof of U.S. citizenship during voter registration and a government-issued photo ID when casting a ballot.  Current Michigan law allows either an ID or a signed affidavit.  Posthumus’ proposal is in response to…

What’s Next for the Woke Bureaucrats in the Administrative State?

President-elect Donald Trump poses a serious threat to the woke bureaucrats and their left-wing allies who have injected their ideology into the administrative state, but these activists won’t be giving up easily. As Trump staffs up for a second term, the bureaucrats have hatched at least three strategies to oppose him: returning to the left-wing nonprofit sphere to act as a government-in-waiting; passing new regulations to cement their ideology into the rules before Trump can reverse them; and burrowing into the bureaucracy to oppose him from within, the same way…
