‘REBELLION’?: Courts Weigh Oregon, Illinois Arguments Against Trump’s National Guard Deployments

Two federal courts heard arguments Thursday about President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to quell unrest near U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in Portland, Oregon, and Chicago. “The district court found that the Portland ICE facility protests were small—less than 30 people—largely sedate and generally peaceful,” Oregon Assistant Attorney General Stacy Chaffin told the three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The hearing was held remotely by video.  Two of the judges, Ryan Nelson and Bridget Bade, are Trump appointees. Another judge, Susan Graber,…

An Unexpected Line in the Sand

There has been talk for millennia about the wheat and the tares and the eventual separation of the two that Jesus foretold. I don’t know if that separation is happening in the ultimate sense right now, but something is happening and it is significantly unsettling. I admit, I thought any major, society-wide division would be on more nuanced grounds. The brashness of the current situation surprises me. Virginia Universities Score a ‘D’ in College Free Speech Rankings

The echoes of Sunday’s memorial service for slain conservative leader Charlie Kirk are still reverberating across the United States. While Kirk’s most effective method for convincing young people about the rightness of conservatism was through his “Prove Me Wrong” college campus tours—including stops originally scheduled at Virginia Tech and Liberty University this month—it seems increasing numbers of campuses no longer believe in the type of open dialogue he was promoting. In that environment comes the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression’s 2026 annual College Free Speech Rankings. >>> Sign up…

Jordan: FBI Has ‘Refocused’ Away From ‘Targeting Citizens for Their Beliefs’

This week, FBI Director Kash Patel appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee and House Judiciary Committee, sparking headlines for fiery exchanges as he defended the bureau from Democrats’ attacks. On Wednesday, Patel appeared before House members, during which House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, had his own memorable moments. During his opening statement at Wednesday’s hearing, Jordan focused in part on how the FBI under then-Director Christopher Wray had been targeting Catholics as well as parents at local school board meetings. Jordan remarked that Patel had “ended the weaponization of…
