MoveOn Statement on President Biden’s Historic Pardons
WASHINGTON – In response to President Joe Biden commuting 1,500 sentences and granting 39 pardons in the biggest single-day act of clemency in modern history, MoveOn Civic Action Executive Director Rahna Epting released the following statement:
“MoveOn applauds President Biden for providing much-deserved second chances and correcting past injustices for those mistreated by a justice system that needs to be reformed to truly make our communities safe. These acts of clemency are a crucial and historic step. We call on the president to continue through the remainder of his term and use every tool at his disposal to protect our futures and freedoms ahead of the upcoming Trump administration.
“In his final weeks in power, President Biden should prioritize certifying the Equal Rights Amendment, ensure the Senate confirms all judicial nominations, and commute death penalty sentences to life in prison for those on death row. With Trump and his rich buddies preparing to use the Oval Office to line their own pockets and take away our rights, there is no time to waste for President Biden to protect the American people.”
