Requirements to Run for Congress

The requirements for a citizen to run for the United States Congress are set forth in the United States Constitution.

Who Can Be a Senator?

Someone who is:

  • At least 30 years old
  • A citizen of the U.S. for at least 9 years
  • A resident of the state where he or she is elected.

Who Can Be a Representative?

Someone who is:

  • At least 25 years old
  • A citizen of the U.S. for at least 7 years
  • A resident of the state where he or she is elected.
