What Democrats Don’t Understand About Ron Johnson

APPLETON, Wisconsin—Senator Ron Johnson was midway through a rambling speech on all that’s wrong with America—his villains included runaway debt, the porous southern border, gender-affirming medical treatment, and FDR’s New Deal—when he paused for a moment of self-reflection. “It’s a huge mess,” Johnson said of the country. “I really ought to have the people who introduce me warn audiences: I’m not the most uplifting character.” A few people in the not-quite-packed crowd at the FreedomProject Academy, a drab, low-slung private school, chuckled. The 67-year-old Republican, stumping for a third term…

Don’t Draft Our Daughters—or Anyone Else

Last year, Congress considered a very bad and ill-considered idea. With no debate and no real scrutiny, there was an effort to add to the annual National Defense Authorization Act a provision to require young women to register for military conscription. The provision was dropped. Proponents will quietly try to add it again this year. It’s still a bad idea. Conservatives in Congress should have nothing to do with this wrongheaded proposal. Before Congress blithely signs off on drafting our daughters, it first ought to consider the question—is that what…

House Republican touts ‘Dignity Act’ bill claiming to make path to legalization, but don’t be fooled

A South Florida Republican has introduced an immigration bill she’s touting as “The Dignity Act.” Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar claims the legislation will “provide a dignified solution to immigrants currently living in the US.” On its surface, it would appear to make Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar a rarity of sorts, a Republican putting forward a pathway to legalization. But don’t be fooled. Experts and immigrant rights advocates note that the path to legalization in Salazar’s bill is a “dead end,” thanks to the ridiculous standards it sets—which Republicans will make sure can never be met. Advocates note…

The Voting-Rights Debate Democrats Don’t Want to Have

Last week was a momentous one for voting rights in America, and not just because of President Joe Biden’s urgent (if unsuccessful) plea for Congress to pass legislation protecting access to the ballot. More than 800,000 people in New York City gained the right to vote with the enactment of a new law allowing legal noncitizens to participate in municipal elections. The law represents one of the biggest single expansions of voting rights in recent years, as well as an enormous victory for immigrants in the nation’s largest city. But…

Attention, Woke Leftists: Women Don’t Want Men in Restroom Stall Next to Them

Students attending Chicago public schools can now use whatever restroom they want. The change is being made in an effort to be more “inclusive” and “equitable,” according to Camie Pratt, chief Title IX officer for Chicago Public Schools. “All restrooms are open for use by anyone who feels comfortable,” Pratt said in a recent video announcing the change.  Pratt says the change is being made in an effort to comply with the U.S. Department of Education’s Title IX protections against discrimination, but there are serious concerns about how the policy…

What We Do, and Don’t, Know About Omicron Variant

There is still little data available on the new omicron variant of COVID-19 but that is not stopping some political leaders from implementing new policies and requirements.  New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has issued a vaccine mandate for employees across the city. The Biden administration is restricting travel from some nations while heavily promoting COVID-19 booster shots. But what do experts say is the right response to the omicron variant?  Political leaders “shouldn’t respond reflexively with the same old, same old tools that haven’t worked all that well…
