Viktor Orbán Could Actually Lose

Viktor Orbán is the closest thing in Europe to a prime minister for life. He has served four consecutive terms since 2010, perpetuating his power with the ruthlessness of a royal. But ruthlessness may not guarantee him reelection. That became clear to me recently in Székesfehérvár, a small city in central Hungary where Orbán was born. Székesfehérvár lacks Budapest’s grand boulevards and baroque extravagance, but the city is not without luster. Hungary’s first king, Stephen I, built a basilica in Székesfehérvár that served as the coronation site for later monarchs.…

Sanctuary Cities—A Dangerous Game We All Lose: The BorderLine

All across America, people are feeling the effects of four years of mass immigration parole programs and the release at the border of millions of aliens we know nothing verifiable about. Many aliens head for big cities that have adopted “sanctuary” policies, whereby their police officers and prosecutors don’t cooperate with federal authorities on immigration enforcement. The most common outcome of this noncooperation is that when Immigration and Customs Enforcement issues a detainer asking local law enforcement to hand over a suspect or convict rather than cut him loose, they…

Should the Secret Service lose its cyber fraud mission? One lawmaker thinks so

New legislation in the House would strip the Secret Service of its mission to investigate financial crimes and cyber fraud in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Rep. Why Kevin McCarthy Can’t Lose George Santos

The Republican Party has had no better friend than Nassau County in the past few years. Of America’s largest counties, few have turned more sharply toward the GOP than New York City’s neighbor to the east. This collection of Long Island suburbs swept Democrats out of local office in 2021, and last fall, Nassau County voted resoundingly Republican in New York’s gubernatorial race. Most important for the national GOP, the county helped elect three Republicans to Congress, including two candidates who flipped Democratic seats in districts that President Joe Biden…

If Democrats Can Lose in Virginia, They Can Lose Almost Anywhere

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va.—The beer was flowing, the handmade potato chips were self-serve, and hope was in the air. Early in the night, the Loudoun County Democrats who gathered at the Döner Bistro in Leesburg were cautiously—anxiously—optimistic: Sure, it had been a rough year. A global pandemic, regular protests at the local school-board meetings, and the contentious governor’s race, rife with misinformation, had pitted neighbor against neighbor. But these volunteers had done the work. They were confident that Democrats could pull off the first victory of the midterm cycle and set…
