Return of the Shaman

Manvir Singh’s new Shamanism: The Timeless Religion ranges widely, introducing us to all sorts of shamans and neo-shamans and proto-shamans. We meet the cigarette-loving tribal healers among the Mentawai people of Indonesia, whom Singh, an anthropologist, has studied since 2014. We meet the psychiatry and medicine professor at Johns Hopkins who reckons that his clinical interventions and against-the-odds healings are the stuff of classic shamanic practice. And we meet the money managers and “hedge wizards” who traffic quasi-shamanically with the capricious spirits of the global market. It’s a panoramic survey:…

Senator Van Hollen Calls for Kilmar Garcia’s return and an End to Trump’s Power Abuse

Kilmar Abrego Garcia still isn’t home, despite the Supreme Court’s unanimous order to facilitate his return. Last week, Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland travelled to El Salvador to check on Kilmar’s well-being. Days after he returned, he joined MoveOn’s monthly Volunteer Network Call to provide a report-back on his visit with Kilmar and to sound the alarm on what this injustice means for all of us. “This case is not about one man alone,” Sen. Van Hollen said. “It’s about all of us. It’s about our Constitution. It’s about…

OPM defends rule to hamper Schedule F’s return, backs telework amid return to office push

The Office of Personnel Management is defending a recently finalized rule meant to prevent the return of Schedule F — a Trump-era policy that made it easier to fire career federal employees in policymaking positions. OPM’s acting director told the House Oversight and Accountability Committee that the re-emergence of such a policy would undermine civil service protections, and return the federal workforce to a 19th-century “spoils system” with major turnover. Acting OPM Director Rob Shriver told lawmakers on Wednesday that the return of Schedule F would have a “chilling effect”…

Supreme Court Hands Short-Term Win to Pride Group, but Encourages Yeshiva University to Return

Another conflict is brewing between the constitutional right to freely exercise religion and the civil right to be free from discrimination. Like several such cases in recent years, the Supreme Court is likely—or so we hope—to decide this one favorably in the end. Yeshiva University, located in New York City, includes America’s largest Jewish undergraduate institution. Yeshiva advocates living in accordance with “Torah values,” including opposition to sexual relations between members of the same sex. Yeshiva denied the application of the YU Pride Alliance, a group opposed to and hoping…
